A life-long creative

Caroline Meehean

A life-long creative, Caroline has explored various artistic media throughout the years — from charcoal to acrylic, fiber to stoneware, and most everything in between. But through it all, time spent in nature where she could often be found creating aesthetically pleasing but short-lived arrangements of stones, sticks, driftwood, and leaves, was her grounding point.

On a mindfulness retreat along the shores of Lake Superior, Caroline discovered her connection to watercolor and the freedom of expression it gave to her in a way that she had only found when artfully arranging materials in their natural environment. The flow of the water and the unpredictable nature of the pigments across the textured landscape of the paper resulted in surprising details, some bold, some subtle, but all necessary to the subject’s beauty.

After more than a decade in creative marketing and professional editorial roles, Caroline is now devoting her time to creating visual art that reminds us to pause and appreciate the beauty both around us and within us.

When not painting or traipsing through the forest, Caroline can be found riding her bike, gliding in her kayak, or sliding on Nordic skis across the snowy landscape of northern Wisconsin.

I've always been drawn to the water and its treasures, specifically that of the Great Lakes.

Why I Create

Rolling in the surf for millions of years, through times of tranquility and turbulence, sharp and jagged stones are patiently sculpted into smooth, beautiful pieces. There are lessons to be learned from this.

I've always been drawn to the water and its treasures, specifically that of the Great Lakes. Time spent along the untamed shores of Lake Superior revives and deepens one’s connection to the beauty and wisdom of the natural world. It is a humbling and refreshing experience — one to be treasured and shared.

I share my experience through watercolor paintings of stacked beach stones, illustrating the natural beauty that surrounds us and reminding us of the balance necessary to live a rich, fulfilling life. The colors in my paintings are intentionally chosen for their symbolism and are those on display throughout the days, months, and seasons along the shores of Gitche Gumee, the greatest of the Great Lakes.
